Hong Kong 7s - Rugby Event

After a long and rainy day at Disney with Ethan (see below pics), Jeff and I were off to the largest live sporting event in Hong Kong, the HK Sevens.  In most people's opinions, the HK Sevens is just a social event more than a true sporting event. It's a scaled down version of the game - 7 players in 2 - 7 minute halfs (now you know where it gets it's name!). Rugby teams select their tournament teams to come and play in this 3 day event. These teams are from all over the world and both Mens and Womens leagues are invited to participate.  The spectators come dressed in crazy costumes and drink WAY TOO much but in seems to be all in good fun! We saw many teams play but of course, our favorite was the USA Men's team. They started out well but were eventually clobbered by the Scotland Team. Yea, well, if this was the NFL things might have turned out different but for now a big "L" sits in our column in this sport. Jeff said he figured it out  - Rugby is just a game of Competitive Attack Hot Potato! ha   A very facinating sport, event, and crowd that I just couldn't miss seeing while we're here!

Below is a link to the official HK Sevens site that will give you more details of the history this event if you are interested:

Two thumbs up on this experience - we'll look forward to it again next March!!

Hong Kong Disneyland

So we finally took Ethan to Disney! We've lived here for 3 months now and live on the same island just 20 minutes away.... after convincing Jeff to take a day off during the week to avoid the excessive weekend crowds - we finally made it! Then....it rained all day!! that didn't stop us from having SO much fun at "Mickey's House!" This park is a much smaller park than the others but just the perfect size for a day trip. We were able to see the whole park and ride a few rides on this day, but we will have to go back for shows and more rides soon. As you'll see in the above pictures, Ethan slipped on the wet pavement and busted his little lip! He was fine once Daddy bought him a Tigger though! With a busted lip and soaking wet parents, Ethan said he was ready to go for now but wanted to come back another day. Done deal! A great family outing with such wonderful memories!

Junk Boat Trip to Lamma

Last Saturday, Jeff and I went on our first "junk boat" trip. Much to my surprise it was not the traditional junk boat that I had seen on the harbor, with it's towering red sails and the deep sense of ancient chinese culture. Rather it was simply a small yacht that you can rent for a certain block of time, BYOB, and have a captn and mate take you to one of the many neighboring islands. I hope it doesn't sound like I'm complaining but I was just a bit disappointed to find this out just 30 minutes before we boarded at Star Ferry pier 9. With that out of the way and a 12 pack of Crown lager (Australian beer), we boarded our boat and began to take in the harbor sites. This particular outing was organized by a few of Jeff's co-workers so we spent much of the 45 minute trip over getting to know each other and tossing back drinks. The sun begins to set as we near Lamma Island and we approach the pier. Lamma Island is the third largest of the islands in HK and seems to be most widely known for it's long row of various seafood restaurants that boast the local cuisine and the freshest seafood in Hong Kong. I would agree with that! The food was amazing! The official area we visited is Sok Kwu Wan or Picnic Bay. A fishing town in the bay.  After dinner we board our junk boat and head home. With a shuffle of U2 music playing in the back ground and the wine and beer still flowing, a group of us head to the top deck. I land (safely and comfortably) on the loungers that line the back of the top deck and take in the beautiful lights of downtown HK. Jeff right next to me.  So though I would have liked to have  set sail on that ancient and traditional junk boat, it was well worth the trip on ANY style boat just to spend this time with Jeff and enjoy the wonderful food and scenery.

Swim Class With Daddy

Jeff and Ethan have been taking swim classes together on Saturday mornings for a few weeks now. I went along one day and saw how much fun they fun they are having in the water and just being together! Ethan has really started to feel more confident (maybe too confident!) in and around the water now. He's been going under and jumping off the side of the pool. I'm so proud of them and wanted to share these pictures with you all of my boys.

Cheung Sha Beach

Jeff, Ethan and I went with some friends this past weekend to Lower Cheung Sha Beach. This beach is located on Southern Lantau Island and is known to be the longest stretch of beach in all of Hong Kong. It's also a very well known area for surfers as it has a place to rent equipment for Kite, Wind, or Longboard surfing. Cheung Sha is divided in to 2 areas - Upper and Lower Cheung Sha. - and is actually a quite public beach that is frequented by both expats and locals.
Lantau Island is the island where we live in Discovery Bay, but to get to this beach we took a ferry to Mui Wo (about 30 minutes) and then a taxi (15-20 minutes) to Cheung Sha Beach. Ethan did great on the ferry but almost lost his lunch on the taxi ride! He didn't but it sure took a while to get his color back in face, poor little guy! We really enjoyed the trip, though the weather was a bit cloudy and cool. The food at the very well known South African restaurant, The Stoep was wonderful! It was certainly the first time we'd ever tried this country's cuisine and we were pleasantly surprised. We truly enjoyed the scenery, food, and company!
