Humidity Is In the Air!

Everyone here has been telling us about how bad the humidity is here and how we have to buy dehumidifiers for our house and closets. Apparently that time is now! If you don't then your clothes, linens, etc will all mildew and mold. We have one appliance that Jeff found for us that has been working well and yesterday I bought the closet "boxes" that must be changed monthly. Right now, some days are worse than others but eventually it will be everyday. The appliance we bought has a "tank" that fills with water from the air about every 6-8 hours. The truth is we really need to get one more of these since our place is so big and has an up and downstairs. I've posted pictures of these things so that you can see what they look like.....they are still odd to look at and to consider to be a "normal" home appliance since this is still such a foreign idea to us. But better to be safe than sorry, though I personally wouldn't mind if I have to go shopping for more clothes again! :0)

Valentine's Day in Hong Kong

I don't have any fun pictures for this post, but if I couldv'e figured out a way to take a picture of all of the Chinese women carrying around the flower bouquets today, I sure would have done it! Apparently, they start the day with a small bouquet that the girl is meant to carry around all day. As the day progresses, they add flowers to the bouquet. It's quite the "pomp and circumstance"  here and we were told by a local that it's the one opportunity that most Chinese (which is 90% of HK) couples go out on their own. Most of them live with their families in small apartments (like 500-700 sq ft) so this is a chance to go out and spend a little time and money on your girl. Apparently, Discovery Bay is quite the "romantic" place to go on this festive holiday as our population grew this weekend! The restaurants were booked and the beach was very crowded to see the fireworks from HK Disney.
For a more personal account of today, Jeff played basketball this morning and then I left for a shopping trip in Stanley (I'll never buy in the States again!). Jeff and Ethan attended their first Swim Play group this morning and Jeff said they really enjoyed it.  I was back in Dbay by 4:00 and the boys picked me up at the ferry pier. Jeff, Ethan and I had a lasagna dinner at home later that evening, then afterwards we put Ethan to bed.  Janice stayed inside tonight to "sit" for Ethan while Jeff and I enjoyed a few drinks and each others company in the plaza. We've had a wonderful mix of personal time, time together as a family, and time together as husband and wife. Who could ask for anything more!

First Day With Our Helper, Janice

Today was Janice's first full day of employment with us. As I type this, it's still a bit odd to know she's now living with us and sleeps in a room in our garage! I'm bummed because I really wanted to take a picture of her room before she moved in but I wasn't able to do it. We had a "handyman" named Nauzer come by on Saturday to put her bed together and I had planned to take a picture afterwards. Instead, Janice requested to come by and wanted to clean her room and move her things in later that morning. I just didn't feel right asking her if I could take a picture at that point. Since she's the only one with a key I can't get in now and wouldn't go in if I had one anyway. Maybe someday there will be an opportunity to take one but for now I'm sorry, you'll just have to take my word for it that it's actually a nice room for her. I'll do my best to satisfy your curiosity at a later date.
Overall, she did a great job today. There were a few things that will just take time, but she made breakfast, lunch, and dinner for Ethan and me and did the cleaning, organizing, and laundry in between. She takes her break (1.5hr.) break during Ethan's nap time which for now works out great. Later, I'll have her here so I can maybe run errands and such during that time but we'll work those things out in time. She's agreed to stay in our house (living room) on Saturday night, while Ethan sleeps and Jeff and I have our first "date night." Coincidentally it will also be Valentine's Day! We'll stay in the Plaza of course this time.  Should be some well deserved time together and I'm really looking forward to it.
There are the obvious things that are just awesome about having someone - especially Janice, here to take care of ALL of these domestic things. It's so nice to not have to worry about "all the things to try to get done" while I'm trying to spend quality time with Ethan. It's nice to be able to trust someone to watch him while I get ready, take a shower, or run a quick errand to the Plaza.  It's very nice to have meals prepared (well) for you and to have your laundry taken care of on a daily basis. It is, however, difficult to be the "boss" for me and to give up some privacy in your own home. It will take some getting use to for all of us and I imagine that in time this will all be second nature. Probably just in time for us to come back to the States!
Ok well, so far that's it. I'll definitely keep you all up to date on how this "new" living arrangement is working out for us. And if you wonder if I feel "spoiled" with having a helper now - yes, I do, and I look forward to the opportunity to spend this time with Ethan, but I also feel like I've just accepted and started a new job myself to oversee the "manager" of our household. This should make for quite an interesting blurb on my resume in the future!

Our Stuff is Here!

Our thing finally arrived this past Saturday! It's taking a little time to find places for all the "stuff" we "thought" we'd need here, but we're getting there. It certainly feels good to have our bed back. Ethan must have thought it was Christmas all over again! Most everything was accounted for and nothing major was broken or damaged so that's good. And now that they finally came to get the rental furniture it's starting to look and feel more like "our new home"
Our helper, Janice has been coming over for 1/2 days this week so that she can get more used to our house and help with organizing. It's nice to have her here and she's doing a great job so far with the everything. She officially starts with us this Monday the 9th so she will move in Sunday night. It's still kind of weird to imagine but I think we've come a long way from where we were with this idea. If our intuitions with Janice are all they play out to be, we will certainly have a hard time not bringing her back with us! LOL  Ethan really likes her too. Today she watched him for about 15 minutes while I was downstairs getting ready for the day. I heard him laughing and really interacting with her and it made me feel very good.
More on this as time goes by, but for now I better get going. As always, we are all missing you all very much!

Our Chinese New Year....

3:04 PM Edit This 0 Comments »
Unfortunately, we missed the majority of the big celebrations for Chinese New Year because Jeff was not feeling well. I was disappointed but I know he couldn't help it! The pictures on this post are from tour Plaza. The Year of the Ox display at the Plaza's central point. The other two pictures are from the small Dragon parade that Ethan and I happened upon when we were going to the soft play center that day. It was a nice surprise.  I thought he might get scared at first but he seemed to really like it. We also ran into one of Ethan's school friends and her parents, who gave him "Lai See" (lucky money).  These are red packets/envelopes with clean/new money usually a $20 dollar bill (that's $2.56US). We've kept it for his keepsakes box here. Jeff also was responsible to give Lai See to his employees - typically any where from $50-100 is expected from a "boss". It's really a neat tradition and is a true example of how this culture looks at the importance of "wealth". Google it and learn more.
I think they are STILL celebrating this holiday and the only way I could ever begin to explain it would be how we celebrate Christmas for the majority of December. Decorations included. I will say it seems their decorations tend to have more meaning behind them. The red and gold/yellow colors are considered their "lucky" colors so everything is done in these colors! I honestly don't know why we decorate everything in red and green for Christmas - I feel bad for not knowing this, but I think being here and celebrating these new holidays will give me more insight in to the meaning of theirs and ours.
